Who can register for a Hukilau Surf Camp?
Our surf camps are geared for middle and high school age youth, but we have been known to make exceptions, and it won’t hurt to ask. Hukilau is best suited for those who have never surfed or are just getting started. Are only requirement is that every camper know how to swim.

What does the word Hukilau mean?
A Festival/Party at the beach, they cast a net into the ocean and then pull both ends into the shore. Hukilau is celebrating the harvest of the nets.

What will I learn at Hukilau Surf Camp?
Not only will you learn how to surf, you will also learn about rip currents, H2O safety and how to keep out beaches clean.

Are Hukilau Surf Camps safe?
While there is always a risk when we enter the ocean, we take as many precautions as we can to insure the safety of our surfers. We always set up camp next to one of Nags Head’s Ocean Rescue (lifeguard) stands. The vast majority of the time, we offer one-on-one instruction, meaning every camper has their own instructor. We also choose our location based on the best surf and the absence of severe rip-tides. And, the surfboards we use are made of extra soft and buoyant material. Although we hate to do it, we have had to cancel camps in the past because the waves were too big or rough.

Will I actually surf?
Our surf instructors are there to guide you every step of the way! While we cant guarantee everyone will stand up on a wave because everyone learns at a different speed. Our instructors will do everything they can to help you advance your surfing skills during camp! Almost all surfers will stand! :)

How much does Hukilau Surf Camp cost?
25 Clams (Dollars that is)! You’ll probably not find another Surf Camp anywhere that costs so little. The reason the cost is so minimal is because we are a non-profit organization. We have a great staff of unpaid volunteers who love nothing more than to teach young people how to surf. Plus, we get to catch a few waves ourselves when we’re out there with you! Along with a three-hour surf session, you’ll receive a killer Hukilau shirt and a bag full of sweet stuff donated from local surf shops.

Who are the instructors?
All of our Instructors are experienced local surfers. Many have been on staff with us since the beginning. While we always do camp in a large group, we try not to overbook ourselves so that we can offer one-on-one lessons, one Instructor per one Camper. We have both men and women Instructors, all of whom have been screened through background checks.

Can I bring my own surfboard?
While we provide plenty of surfboards, if you want to bring your own, you are more than welcome to. The surfboards we provide are longboards and are made of a special material that makes it easier for beginners to learn.

What should I bring to a Hukilau Surf Camp?
Please bring a swim suite, towel and a fun attitude :)
